about

I don't think that I ever, in fact, returned home is a documentary audio work by myself and Kit Wilmans Fegradoe.

The work is built around a recording of me and my father meeting after an estrangement of just under a decade. The project is about our forgiveness and reconciliation - but also about my reconciliation with Britain and its history. It seeks cross generational solidarity and gratitude to the generations of British south Asians who came before me.

Throughout the piece are samples from the British South Asian archive - snippets of experiences of brown folks growing up in 70’s Britain - I hope it holds a space for healing - perhaps one that was denied to my father.

My dad would talk fleetingly about growing up in the midlands in the 70s - he’s of that generation of men that sometimes values pride over emotional truth, so many of the stories of my dad’s mistreatment were never dwelled upon. I hope the work makes those connections so he doesn’t have to.

Kit Wilmans Fegradoe’s beautiful compositions weave together the
archival material with a blend of traditional Indian instruments and
electronic synthesis. Fegradoe, who is also of mixed south Asian
heritage, often leads with the Swarsangum which is a striking hybrid contemporisation of two classical Indian instruments.
